An international summit is a meeting that brings together leaders from various countries or regions to discuss and drive commitments related to a specific issue. Generally, summits are considered to have an important symbolic value as they can offer political actors a platform on which to establish a common language, define mandates and systematize new theoretical and practical references in hemispheric relations.
The upcoming international summits will focus on a variety of issues, from peace and security to climate change, global governance, trade, and poverty reduction. As the world enters a critical phase with slow or even negative progress in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reimagining the multilateral system, leaders will be tasked with taking bold steps to address urgent challenges such as displacement, inequality and conflict.
In addition to addressing these pressing challenges, the Summit of the Americas, will serve as a testbed to see how the new era in hemispheric relations can work with the existing institutions of the Organization of American States and with the broader inter-American system. This new era will need to be built on a firm foundation of democratic principles, values and responsibilities; on mechanisms that enssure the consolidation of democracy, the expansion of commerce and regional integration; and on new strategies to overcome obstacles to economic development.
Likewise, the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa will be an opportunity for leaders from across the globe to explore how to promote and implement a new vision of solidarity, equality and sustainability, based on the principle that no one should be left behind. This will require new approaches and a commitment to achieving the SDGs by 2030.
